Why Do I Need a Root Canal?
The pulp or root of your tooth is a bundle of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. This pulp can become inflamed or infected for several reasons, including cavities, chips, and cracks. In these cases, the affected pulp will need to be removed via a root canal.
The Root Canal Procedure
Your dentist will give you local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. Then, they will drill into your tooth and remove the affected pulp. Afterwards, the area will be thoroughly flushed and cleaned. Your dentist will then fill and seal the hole.

The Tooth Extraction Process
Your dentist will begin by numbing the area of extraction. They will then make an incision in the gum to expose the tooth, break apart the tooth if necessary, then extract it using forceps. If the tooth has not fully erupted, your dentist will instead arrange for a surgical extraction.
